What Actually Makes Someone Stop Scrolling?

Think about how fast you scroll through Instagram or TikTok. Most of the time, you’re deciding within a second or two whether something is worth watching. That’s why good social media content isn’t just about looking nice. It has to give people a reason to stop.

Start with the interesting part

One of the biggest mistakes I see businesses make is starting videos too slowly. A reel might open with a logo, a long intro, or someone getting ready to speak. By then, the viewer may already be gone. Instead, start with the part that actually matters.

Show the finished result first. Ask the question. Put the main point on the screen. If it’s a product, show it being used. If it’s a process, show the most interesting part first. Give people a reason to stay before asking them to keep watching.

People connect with people

Some of the best performing content isn’t the most polished ones. A casual video of someone talking, packing an order, or setting up for an event, can feel more personal compared to feeling like an advertisement.

Social media is supposed to feel social. Consumers want to see the faces, personalities, and moments behind a business. The more natural the content feels, the less it feels overly produced.

Show something happening

Movement naturally catches attention. Pouring a drink, opening a package, walking through a space, or switching angles can make even a simple video feel more captivating. You don’t need crazy transitions or complex editing. Sometimes, something just needs to be happening on screen to drive people in.

Give people something worth watching

A good opening gets someone’s attention, but the rest of the content has to keep it there. Usually, that means teaching something, answering a question, entertaining someone, showing a process, or giving them a behind the scenes look.

The best content gives people a reason to stay curious. Show them how something works, what happens before the final result, or a part of the process they normally wouldn’t see. Even simple moments can become interesting when they give the viewer a new perspective or make them want to see what happens next.

Takeaway!

There’s no perfect formula for making someone stop scrolling. The best content usually has a few things in common: it gets to the point quickly, feels human, is easy to understand, and gives the viewer something they actually care about.

Before you post, ask yourself one question:

If I didn’t know this business, would I stop and watch this?
